The story of Morena Safaris

Morena Safaris is based in Edinburgh, Scotland, but sells trip to international customers from across the world. My name is Malcolm McFadyen and the story of Morena Safaris is effectively my story. I am a Scot and a former African bush pilot, who became captivated by safari Africa while flying over the Okavango Delta, Victoria Falls and the Namib Desert. I am now privileged to share my safari passion to inspire people like you to go on their own African adventures.

My love affair with Africa began in Uganda, where I first set foot on African soil as an officer cadet with the Officer Training Corps. That experience ignited a promise to return to Africa and when the private jet company I worked for began downsizing, I seized the moment. With my bags packed and a handful of CVs in hand, I ventured to the bustling town of Maun, the lifeblood of the African safari industry in Botswana. There I lived in a 2 man tent for 2 months, going to the airport most days in the search for work. I inadvertently also became one of the stars of the TV series 'Bush Pilots', which documented my search for work over 10 episodes. Eventually my commitment paid off as was rewarded with a coveted job as a captain by Wilderness Air.

I loved the freedom and responsibility of operating as a professional bush pilot in the African Wilderness and I knew I had a special job when I realised that it was an unusual day for me at work if I didn't see elephants. I went on to become a training captain and aviation safety manager, and when I return to Botswana, it warms my heart to see local pilots that I helped trained now training the next generation of local pilots.

After Botswana, I moved to Namibia, where I was enthralled by the majesty of the Namib Desert and its desert adapted inhabitants. I always describe travelling around Namibia, not like travelling around a single country on Earth, but more like travelling between multiple alien planets due to the incredible variety of landscapes.

After Namibia, I returned to Europe where I worked for two airlines in the Channel Islands before joining the British Antarctic Survey. The mesmerising draw of Mother Africa never left me though and I went on to spend 3 years as as a senior safari specialist at Europe's Leading Safari Tour Operator - as awarded by the World Travel Awards 10 years in a row.

After a bit of a career break, I decided the time was right to set up my own safari agency and Morena Safaris was born! My commitment to providing a truly personal safari-planning experience means you will receive a journey crafted with love and authenticity. Independent and proud, I offer honest, expert guidance based on real experiences gained from years of operating safaris in Africa. What does Morena mean?

Morena means king, chief or leader in Sotho and Setswana. It embodies authority, respect and a deep connection to the land and its people. It's also commonly used as a form of address for a man that you respect. When I was a pilot in Botswana some of my local colleagues used to call me morena. (I have also been called matlelepula - bringer of the rain - but that is a different story for another day).

By choosing the name Morena Safaris, this reflects my commitment to offering safari experiences that are not only luxurious but also immersive and deeply rooted in African traditions. Just as a Morena leads with wisdom and dignity, Morena Safaris curates journeys that guide guests through Africa’s majestic landscapes with reverence and authenticity—offering a safari experience worthy of royalty.
